GREENVILLE, S.C. (Mar. 17, 2012) – After firing its lowest team score of the season yesterday and sitting in fourth place, the ETSU men’s golf team struggled a bit on day two by dropping to 15th position at the Furman Intercollegiate on Saturday.
Freshman Sam Edwards (Bigbury, England) fired the low score of the day for the Bucs with a second round even-par 72. Edwards is tied with teammate Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) for 32nd position on the individual leaderboard at 1-over-par. After carding a 3-under 69 on Friday, Enoch could not quite get it going on Saturday as he finished with a 76.
ETSU currently sits in 15th in the 21-team field after following up an opening round 289 (+1) with an 11-over 299 on Saturday. No. 14 Clemson rose to the top of the leaderboard after starting the day in fifth position. The Tigers shot a tournament low round of 276 (-11) on Saturday to own a six-shot lead over Virginia Tech. Georgia State is in third at even-par, while Coastal Carolina (+1) and Wofford (+2) round out the top-five.
Matt Thompson of Michigan sits atop the individual leaderboard after equaling the lowest round of the day with a 5-under 67. Thompson is a 9-under overall and leads by just one shot over Sebastian Soderberg of Coastal Carolina, who recorded his second straight 68. Thomas Bradshaw of Clemson, Daniel Kim of Gardner-Webb, Blake Redmond of Virginia Tech and Crawford Reeves of Clemson are tied for third at 4-under.
Freshman Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) had a tough day after following up an opening round 71 with a second round 78 to sit in a tie for 66th at +5. Fellow freshman Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland) recorded the second best ETSU score of the day with a 2-over 74 and is tied for 71st at +6 (76-74—150).
