MACON, Ga. (April 17, 2013) – Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) helped guide the ETSU men’s golf team to its first title since 2011 as the Blue and Gold won the Coca-Cola Invitational Tuesday at the Country Club of Spartanburg, and the Buccaneer sophomore was rewarded for his solid play by landing Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Week honors on Wednesday afternoon.
Pugh – who recorded his best collegiate finish and was named to the all-tournament team – tied for third at 5-under-par 211 (72-68-71). The Welsh standout played the par-5s at 9-under and the par-3s at 1-under for the week, resulting in the second lowest scores in the tournament.
Overall, Pugh’s three-round total of 211 was the lowest score carded in his Buccaneer career, cutting two strokes off his previous best which was set last season in the same tournament. Meanwhile, Pugh’s second-round score of 4-under 68 was his second-lowest round registered in his first two seasons at ETSU, as he fired a career-best 66 in the first round at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate back in September.
As a team, the Bucs rallied from eight shots down to defeat Wofford by two strokes to win the tournament title. ETSU finished a season-best 11-under-par 853.
Pugh and the Bucs now gear up for the 2013 A-Sun Championship, which begins Sunday at The Legends Course in Braselton, Ga.
