Mens Golfers Finish Fifth in Carpet Capital Classic

Sunday, October 08, 2000

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.-- Senior Chris Wisler shot a 1-over par 73 to finish in a tie for sixth individually and lead the Buccaneers to a fifth-place team finish in the Carpet Capital Classic from The Farm Golf Course in Rock Face, Ga.

Play on Sunday saw scores rise with cold and windy conditions making scoring difficult. The 20th ranked Buccaneers shot Sunday's best round of any the 15 teams, firing a combined 299, two shots better than seventh-ranked Clemson, Wake Forest and Auburn.

Wisler finished in a tie at 1-over par with 25th ranked David Sanchez of N.C. State, Nick Gilliam of Florida and Cortland Lowe of Wake Forest. Sophomore Thomas Lee shot a 4-over par 76 on the day to finish in a tie with Chris Mundorf of N.C. State for 16th at 4-over. Senior Pat Beste also shot 4-over par on Sunday to finish in a three-way tie for 28th with sixth-ranked Johan Kok of South Carolina and Gregg Jones of Clemson. Rounding out the Buccaneers tournament were sophomore Adam Riddering finishing in a four-way tie for 31st at 8-over for the tournament and freshman Anders Hofvander shooting 19-over for the tournament to finish in a tie for 62nd.

Georgia Tech shot a combined 870 to win the Carpet Capital Collegiate for their second consecutive team title in the event. The Buccaneers shot a 884 overall to finish 14 shots back. Kyle Thompson of South Carolina shot a 2-under par 70 to win the individual title at 8-under, with Wisler finishing nine shots back.
