Johnson City, Tenn. (Apr. 19, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State men's golf team fired a first-round 291 in Friday's first round of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships from the Furman University Golf Course in Greeneville, S.C.
The Buccaneers are currently at 3-over par, nine strokes back of the team leaders, host Furman University and College of Charleston who both shot a 282 on Friday.
Junior Adam Riddering (Maple Grove, Minn.) leads the Bucs after the first day of play after shooting a first round 1-under-par 71. He finds himself in a four-way tie for eighth place.
Fellow junior James Johnson (Barbados) and freshman Jeremy Hobson (Thonotasassa, Fla.), are tied for 21st, two shots behind Riddering. The two Buccaneers both fired 1-over-par 73's in Friday's first round.
Freshman Cennydd Mills (Cardiff, Wales) is one shot in back of Johnson and Hobson, in a tie for 25th after shooting a 2-over-par 74 in the first round of play. Freshman Marco Trejos (San Jose, Costa Rica) rounded out the first round for the Bucs, finishing in a tie for 35th after carding a 4-over-par 76 on Friday.
The Bucs return to the links tomorrow morning for the second round of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships from the Furman Golf Course in Greenville, S.C., hosted by Furman University.
