AUBURN, Ala. (May 17, 2003) - The East Tennessee State University men's golf team finished the third and final round of the NCAA East Regional Saturday at the Auburn University Club, posting a score of 22-over-par 886 (297-296-293) and placing 12th in the 27-team field.
The effort came up nine strokes shy of the all-important 10th place spot, which would have given the Bucs yet another trip to the NCAA Championships - it would have been ETSU's 15th trip to the NCAAs in the program's history.
Freshman Derek McNamara (Galway, Ireland) finished the event as ETSU's top individual performer, placing in a tie for 39th after shooting a three-round score of 3-over 219 (75-71-73). Meanwhile, senior James Johnson (Barbados) finished tied for 51st (72-75-75=222 +6), sophomore Cennydd Mills (Cardiff, Wales) placed in a tie for 58th (74-76-73=223 +7), and sophomores Jeremy Hobson (Thonotosassa, Fla.) and Chase Baldwin (Plant City, Fla.) rounded out the ETSU efforts by tying for in 76th and 106th, respectively.
Clemson outlasted Georgia Tech by nine strokes to win the team title at 25-under-par. The Yellow Jackets, however, did bring home the individual title thanks to Troy Matteson's three-round score of 15-under 201, which bested the field by seven strokes.
