Knoxville, Tenn. (Oct. 22, 2002) - The East Tennessee State's men's golf team shot a 289 in their final round off play to finish fifth in the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions from Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Buccaneers finished the tournament with a three-round 863, 23 shots behind team champion Georgia. The Bulldogs had a remarkably consistent three rounds, firing a 280 in each.
Sophomore Jeremy Hobson (Thonotosassa, Fla.) shot a final round even-par 72 to finish in a tie for 12th (72-70-72=214). The finish is the best of his ETSU career as is the three-round 214.
Senior Adam Riddering (Maple Grove, Minn.) shot his best round of the fall season with a 2-under-par 70 in the final round to move up to a tie for 20th (75-72-70=217). Fellow senior James Johnson (Barbados) shot a final-round 1-over-par 73 to finish in a tie for 32nd (76-71-73=220).
Sophomores Chase Baldwin (Brandon, Fla.) Marcos Trejos (San Jose, Costa Rica) rounded out ETSU's tournament, tying for 39th. Trejos shot a third-round 2-over-par 74 (72-76-74=222) while Baldwin carded an 8-over-par 80 (72-70-80=222).
Sophomore Hamilton Wheeler (Bowling Green, Ky.) played as an individual in the tournament and finished in a tie for 64th at 12-over-par (74-75-79).
This tournament concludes ETSU's fall season. The Buccaneers return to action at the Tulane Invitational Feb. 10-11 from New Orleans, La.
