Wednesday, October 09, 2002

Newport, R.I. (Oct. 9, 2002) - The East Tennessee State's men's golf team tied their best finish of the young season, finishing sixth after Wednesday's third and final round of the Adams Cup from Newport National Golf Club in Newport, R.I. The Buccaneers had a very strong third round, shooting a tournament-best 280 to close out the competition. Every Buccaneer shot their best round of the tournament in Wednesday's play. The torrid final round got the Bucs within just eight strokes of team champion, Michigan State. Sophomore Marcos Trejos (San Jose, Costa Rica), matched the best score of the final round and the best of his career with a 68. Today's round propelled Trejos into a tie for third (75-71-68=214) at even par, the highest finish of his career and ETSU's best individual finisher of the season. Senior James Johnson (Barbados) also had a strong round, shooting a 2-under-par 70 to finish in a tie for eighth at 2-over-par (71-75-70=216). After shooting an 82 in his second round of play, sophomore Jeremy Hobson (Thonotosassa, Fla.) rebounded by firing a third-round 70. The best round of Hobson's career moved him into a tie for 34th (74-82-69=225). Sophomore Chase Baldwin (Brandon, Fla.) was the next ETSU finisher, tying for 58th (80-78-73=231) after shooting a 73, improving his second round score by five strokes. Senior Adam Riddering (Maple Grove, Minn.), rounded out ETSU's tournament, finishing in a tie for 67th (82-77-75=234).
