Newport, R.I. (Oct. 8, 2002) - The East Tennessee State's men's golf team finished the first round of the Adams Cup from the Newport National Golf Club in Newport, R.I. Tuesday, shooting a 300 to finish in a tie for seventh in a field of 17 teams.
The Buccaneers are tied for seventh with host Rhode Island, just seven strokes behind team leaders, Virginia Tech.
Two rounds were scheduled for Tuesday, but the second round was not completed due to darkness at 6:30 p.m. with most players having two or three holes remaining. The remaining holes will be completed at Newport National on Wednesday at 7 a.m. with the final 18 holes of the tournament taking place at Newport Country Club.
Senior James Johnson (Barbados) carded one of the best rounds of the day, firing a 2-under-par 70 to finish the first round in a tie for third. Sophomore Jeremy Hobson (Thonotosassa, Fla.) also played well for the Bucs, tying for 16th after shooting a 2-over-par 74.
Sophomore Marcos Trejos (San Jose, Costa Rica), finished just one stroke behind Hobson, tying for 24th at 3-over-par. Sophomore Chase Baldwin (Brandon, Fla.) was the next ETSU finisher, tying for 68th after shooting an 8-over-par 80 in Tuesday's first round.
The final Buccaneer finisher was senior Adam Riddering (Maple Grove, Minn.), who shot a 10-over-par 82 in the first round to finish in a tie for 78th.
ETSU returns to action tomorrow morning for the conclusion of the second and the third and final round of the Adams Cup from Newport, R.I.
