Shaw finishes fourth, Bucs fifth at Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, P.R. (March 2, 2008) - Sophomore Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) posted the  low round of the day for the ETSU men's golf team, firing a 4-under-par 68 to help the No. 24 Buccaneers to an impressive fifth place finish Sunday in the highly competitive Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club's River Course.

 

While Power was the top individual for the Bucs on Sunday, senior Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) posted the best tournament finish for ETSU, firing an even par 72 on Sunday and ending the event tied for fourth at 5-under 211 (70-69-72). ETSU ended the tournament 13 strokes back of team champion and No. 2-ranked Alabama. The Bucs, who were 10 strokes back of No. 4 Oklahoma State and just six strokes behind No. 1 Georgia, finished ahead of No. 6 Georgia Tech and No. 13 Duke.

 

"We shot our low round of the tournament today, and obviously this was a good tournament and finish for us," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren. "Gareth had a really good tournament and Seamus played a great round today. It was a good showing."

 

Along with Shaw's fourth-place finish and Power's tie for 31st, the Bucs second best effort for the tournament came from freshman Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England), who finished tied for 20th at 2-over 218. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Simon Doherty (Belfast, Northern Ireland) and senior Cian McNamara (Limerick, Ireland) finished tied for 43rd and 55th respectively.
