Thursday, July 15, 2010
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (July 15, 2010) - Former ETSU All-American Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) fired an opening round 1-over par-73, Thursday afternoon at the British Open Championship.
Davies, playing in his second career Open Championship opened his first round at the historic Old Course at St. Andrews with eight pars and one bogey on the front nine. He began the back nine with a birdie on the 10th, before finishing up his round with a bogey at the world famous "road hole" 17th , and a par on the 18th to finish his round at 1-over and tied for 97th.
Rory McIlroy has the first round lead as he fired an impressive 9-under par 63 (33-30) to take a two-shot lead over South African, Louis Oosthuizen. The round of 63 shot by McIlroy tied a major championship record.
The birthplace of golf played uncharacteristically straightforward during the morning rounds with limited rain and calm winds. The weather was projected to be windy and rainy but the rain held off for the most part and the sun even came out during the late morning to early afternoon.
Davies; however, had to fight some increasing winds and rain during his afternoon round. He is currently tied with many notable names such as Phil Mickelson, Tom Watson, Mike Weir, Davis Love III, Luke Donald, and Angel Cabrera after the opening round.
Davies will begin his second round tomorrow at 4:20 a.m. (ET) and will still be paired with Justin Leonard (4-over), and Edoardo Molinari (3-under). ESPN will continue its coverage tomorrow beginning again at 4 a.m. (ET).
