RIO MAR, Puerto Rico (Feb. 20, 2011) - ETSU freshman Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) fired a 3-under 69 to lead the Bucs Sunday in round one of the Puerto Rico Classic at the River Course at Rio Mar Country Club. Lawson is tied for the individual lead with seven other players.
ETSU closed out the opening day with a 6-over 294 as a team and are currently tied for 12th place in the 15-team field. Georgia Tech leads at 10-under par, while Alabama sits in second at 7-under par. Oklahoma State holds third at 5-under par, and Virginia Tech is in fourth at 2-under par. Oklahoma rounds out the top-five at 1-under par.
Eight players are tied for the individual lead at 3-under par, including Lawson, who finished his opening round with four birdies and just one bogey. Lawson started on the fifth hole Sunday and birdied three of his first nine holes. He birdied the 11th, 13th, second, and seventh holes.
Sophomore Patrick Spraggs (Rochford, England) had a solid opening round as he carded a 2-over 74, which included 16 pars and two bogeys. Spraggs is currently tied for 42nd position. Junior Devin Komline (Dorset, Vt.) finished the day just one shot behind Spraggs as he recorded a 3-over 75. Komline is tied for 56th place.
Freshman Lucas Armstrong (Church Hill, Tenn.) is currently tied for 62nd in the 75-player field after a 4-over 76 in the opening round. Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland) rounded out the ETSU scoring with a first round 78.
The Bucs tee off in Monday's second round at 8 a.m. and they will be paired with players from Clemson and Texas.
