ETSU men's golf looks to defend its title at the General Hackler Championship

Friday, March 11, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.
(Mar. 11, 2011) - After opening its spring season at the JU Invitational and later at the Puerto Rico Classic, the ETSU men's golf team returns to action on Sunday as the Bucs are looking to defend their 2010 title at the General Hackler Championship, held in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Coastal Carolina will host the 17-team event that features 12 in the Golf Week/Sagarin top 100 team rankings, including #8 Auburn, #15 Augusta State, #18 Virginia, #25 Wake Forest, #35 Pepperdine, #38 Tennessee, #48 East Carolina, #49 North Florida, #58 Coastal Carolina, #70 Lamar, #90 ETSU and #96 College of Charleston. Augusta State is the reigning NCAA Champions, while the Bucs are the defending General Hackler champions.

The event will be held at the par-72, 6,950-yard TPC of Myrtle Beach layout, which was designed by world famous golf course architect Tom Fazio and former PGA Tour star Lanny Wadkins.

Last year, ETSU used the win to jump start a strong spring season that eventually finished with the Atlantic Sun Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Regionals.

The Bucs have had plenty of success in the General Hackler Championship over the years as they have won the event twice in the past four years. Last season, ETSU led from start to finish for its second team title of the spring. Seamus Power won the individual title after finishing the event with a three-round score of 1-under. The Bucs finished the event three shots clear of host Coastal Carolina and nine shots ahead of the eventual NCAA Champions Augusta State.

The first two rounds are set for Sunday with the final round to tee off on Monday. Live scoring for the event will be available through Golf Stat at ETSUBucs.com.
The General Hackler Championship is named in honor of the late United States Air Force General James F. Hackler, Jr., a long-time supporter of Chanticleer golf. Coastal Carolina also has previously honored Hackler with the naming of the Coastal men's and women's golf program's Hackler Trophy. The trophy is awarded annually to the individual chosen on an established record of academic achievement, dedicated to the ideals of citizenship, devotion to preserving the integrity in the playing of the game of golf, and abilities as a golfer with special emphasis on the scholar-athlete's sportsmanship and attitude toward fulfilling his or her potential in the game.
