Men's golf downed by Georgia Tech at Callaway Match Play

Monday, March 21, 2011

BALL GROUND, Ga. (Mar. 21, 2011)
- No. 3-seeded Georgia Tech took three out of the five matches to defeat 15-seeded ETSU, 3-0-2, in the third round of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championships on Monday afternoon.

Georgia Tech got off to a strong start as Paul Haley and Richy Werenski picked up early victories. Haley defeated Lucas Armstrong (Church Hill, Tenn.) 5 and 3, while Werenski beat Patrick Spraggs (Rochford, England), 5 and 3.

ETSU will take on UCLA tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. in the final round of the event.

Georgia Tech clinched the match after James White defeated Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland), 3 and 1.

After being down late in the match to Kyle Scott, ETSU junior Devin Komline (Dorset, Vermont) managed to win the final hole of the day to halve the match. Freshman Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) also managed to halve his match against J.T. Griffin. Lawson was down through the first 15-holes before tying the match up with just two holes to play.

The event is comprised of four rounds of match play between teams, similar to the Final Eight of the NCAA Championship. Each team match includes individual matches between each of the five players, and the winner of each individual match scores a point for his team.

Georgia Tech is the host school and is joined by USC, Alabama, Baylor, Duke, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Pacific, South Carolina, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA and Washington State. Georgia (2005) and UCLA (2007) are past winners of the event while 2010 runner-up USC leads a contingent of five teams (Iowa, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA) returning from last year's tournament.
