Friday, October 14, 2011

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (Oct. 14, 2011) – Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) and Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) shot matching rounds of 76 to lead the ETSU men’s golf team to a tie for 13th position on the opening day of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club on Friday.

The conditions were not ideal for scoring on the opening day as wind gusts reached near 30 miles per hour on the 7,147-yard, par-72 Blackthorn Club at The Ridges layout. Only four golfers in the 82-player field recorded rounds under par on the difficult scoring day.

The Bucs are tied for 13th position after finishing with a 313 (+25) team score on the opening day. N.C. State put together quite an impressive opening day by shooting a 287 (-1) team score to grab an eight-shot lead.  Virginia is in second (295), while Missouri and UNC Wilmington are tied for third at 296.

Tennessee and Memphis are tied for fifth at 298, followed by Kent State (303), Louisville (303), Wake Forest (304), Toledo (308), Virginia Tech (310), Villanova (310), ETSU, Clemson (313) and Army (313).

Mark McMillen of N.C. State has the individual lead as he fired an impressive first-round 4-under 68. McMillen had six birdies and two bogeys during his round. Chris Selfridge of Toledo is in second after a 2-under 70. Meanwhile, Denny McCarthy of Virginia and Jace Long of Missouri shot were the only other players in the field to shoot under-par with matching 71s to sit in a tie for third.

Enoch and Pugh sit in a tie for 32nd position, while ETSU sophomore Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) shot an opening round 80 and is tied for 63rd.

Freshmen Sam Edwards (Bigbury, England) and Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland) each shot 81 and are tied for 68th position.  Meanwhile, freshmen Tom Heggarty (Cheshire, England) and Justin Hulbert (Orlando, Fla.) competed for the Bucs as individuals.

The Bucs tee off round number two tomorrow beginning at 8:30 a.m. They will be paired with Clemson and Army on day two.
