PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 29, 2012) – The ETSU men’s golf team will open its 2012 spring season on Monday at the PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass for the Sea Best Invitational.
The 13-team field at the Sea Best Invitational consists of CharlestonSouthern, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, ETSU, Florida, Florida Golf Coast, Georgia State, Jacksonville, Jacksonville State, Liberty, Mercer, Old Dominion and UNF. Of the teams competing, UNF is ranked seventh in the Golfworld/Nike Golf coaches’ poll, while Florida and Liberty are receiving votes.
Last season, ETSU finished ninth in the event, while top-rankedFloridaearned the wire-to-wire victory as the Gators were the only team to shoot under-par for the tournament. The Gators finished the event at 6-under (286-283-289--858), 25 strokes better than second place finisher North Florida, who finished at 19-over (300-286-297--883). Jacksonville State and No. 42 Liberty tied for third at 22-over, while No. 40 Clemson rounded out the top-five at 24-over.
ETSU senior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall,England) was the most consistent Buccaneer during the fall season as he led the team with a 73.8 scoring average, which included four top-20 finishes.
Along with Enoch, ETSU will feature four freshmen in the lineup at the Sea Best Invitational. Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales), Sam Edwards (Bigbury, England), Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland) and Tom Heggarty (Cheshire,England) will join Enoch.
The Bucs have enjoyed plenty of success in the event as they earned the team title in 2010 at TPC Sawgrass. The Buccaneers, who were ranked 39th by Golfstat.com, fired a final round 299 to best No. 34 Wake Forest by seven strokes and No. 23 Clemson by eight strokes. ETSU placed four players in the top-15 of the individual leaderboard.
Tee times for Monday’s 36 holes will begin with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start. The Bucs will be paired with CharlestonSouthern and JacksonvilleStateon day one. Live scoring for the tournament will be available through golfstat.com.
