Friday, March 16, 2012

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Mar. 16, 2012) – Coming off his best round of the year on Monday, senior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) continued his strong play as he fired an opening round 3-under 69 to lead the ETSU men’s golf team to a fourth place start at the Furman Intercollegiate on Friday.

ETSU currently sits in fourth in the 21-team field after opening with a 289 (+1) and the Bucs are just three shots behind opening day leader Troy. The Trojans opened with a 286 (-2) and they lead by only two over Wofford and Francis Marion in the bunched up field that has 15 of the 21 teams within 10 shots of the lead. No. 14 Clemson rounds out the top-five after carding a team score of 290.

Meanwhile, Enoch sits in a tie for fourth individually after his five birdie and two bogey round of 69 at the par-72 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course. Enoch is three shots off the lead held by Georgia’s Sepp Straka. Straka opened with a 6-under 66 to lead by two-shots. Sebastian Soderberg of Coastal Carolina and Matt Thompson of Michigan share second place at 4-under, while Enoch is tied for fourth with Austin Reeves of Furman and William Sigg of Presbyterian.

Freshman Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) finds himself just outside of the top-ten after carding a 1-under 71 to sit in a tie for 11th. Pugh had three birdies and two bogeys on the afternoon. The 1-under score was his top round of the spring. Pugh also fired a round of 71 in the final round of the General Hackler Championship on the par-71 DeBordieu Club.

Sam Edwards (Bigbury, England) had his best round of the spring with a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for 30th. Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland) rounded out the ETSU qualifying scores with a 3-over 76 and he is tied for 77th.

Round two will get underway tomorrow beginning at 8:00 a.m. Live results will be available at golfstat.com.
