Men’s golf tied for second after two rounds at Coca-Cola Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Apr. 9, 2012) – After firing its top two team scores of the season, the ETSU men’s golf team sits in a tie for second on day one of the Coca-Cola Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

ETSU, the defending back-to-back champions of the event, fired rounds of 285 (3-under) and 286 (2-under) in the tournament’s first 36-holes on the par-72, 6,648-yard layout. The Bucs led the field in par 3 scoring at +1, while ranking second in the field in par 5 scoring at an impressive 22-under.

The Bucs were led by freshman Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland) as he sits in a tie for fifth place at 4-under-par (68-72—140). Meanwhile, sophomore Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) joins Gibson in the top-10 as he stands in a tie for ninth at 2-under (70-72—142).

Charleston Southern leads the team standings by nine shots over ETSU and Campbell (288-283—571). CSU stands at 14-under (282-280—562). Gardner-Webb was the only other school below par after two rounds as they finished at 1-under. High Point rounds out the top-five at even-par.

Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume owns the individual lead 11-under-par (69-64—133). His second round 64 matches the lowest score ever recorded at the Coca Cola Invitational and his 133 total is a new tournament low. Sam Ryder of Stetson is just one shot back at 10-under (68-66—134). Meanwhile, Charleston Southern teammates Jacobo Pastor and Ross Thomson share third place at 6-under. Gibson, Chase Wilson of High Point and Darren Cook of Appalachian State are in fifth at 4-under.

ETSU freshman Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) finds himself in the top-20 after recording back-to-back rounds of 72. Meanwhile, Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) followed up an opening round 75 with a 2-under-par 70 to sit in a tie for 25th. Freshman Tom Heggarty (Cheshire, England) recorded two consecutive rounds of 75 and is tied for 59th.

The third and final round will get underway tomorrow morning with 18-holes of play.
