Men’s golf opens up play at A-Sun Championship on Monday

Sunday, April 15, 2012

BRASELTON, Ga. (Apr. 15, 2012) - The ETSU men's golf team will look to win its third Atlantic Sun title when the Bucs open play at the A-Sun Championship on Monday at the Chateau Elan Golf Club and Resort.

The A-Sun Championship is a 54-hole event with 18 holes being played each day, Monday-Wednesday at The Legends Course, which will be played at 6,971 yards and is a par-72 layout.

ETSU enters the A-Sun Championship filled with confidence after firing its lowest scores of the season at last week’s Coca-Cola Invitational. The Bucs finished fifth in last year’s A-Sun Championship.

Kennesaw State ended all three rounds of the 2011 Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Championship with the lead and was crowned champions for the first time in school history. The Owls posted a 54-hole score of (280-283-282--845, -7) to finish as the only team under-par, besting second place UNF (854, +2) by nine-strokes. Campbell concluded just one-stroke behind UNF carding a (855, +3).

A Buccaneer has won the medalist honor at four of the last five A-Sun Championships (Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) in 2007 and 2010, Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland) in 2009 along with Gareth Shaw in 2008). The Bucs broke the A-Sun record for most consecutive individual championships in 2010 when Power won the individual title.

North Florida is the top-ranked team in the tournament, coming in at No. 8 in the latest Golfstat ranking. The Ospreys are followed by Kennesaw State (No. 41), Florida Gulf Coast (No. 88), Mercer (No. 89), ETSU (No. 112), Jacksonville (No. 144), Upstate (No. 152), Belmont (No. 203), Stetson (No. 221) and Lipscomb (No. 244).

Play begins at 8 a.m. with live results available at Golfstat.com.
