JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 5, 2012) – Fresh off his European Amateur Championship title last month at the Carton House Golf Club, sophomore Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) was recognized as one of the “Top 50 Male Players to Watch,” according to Golf World.
Pugh, who rallied from eight shots back and finished the final round with a 66 at the European Amateur Championship, earned a spot in the 2013 Open Championship by winning the title.
Prior to winning the European Amateur Championship, Pugh finished his freshman season with the Bucs in April. In his first year, Pugh participated in 10 events for the Blue and Gold and enjoyed his best finish at the Coca-Cola Invitational, where he finished in a tie for eighth. Pugh ended the 2011-12 campaign at the Atlantic Sun Championship as he and North Florida’s Joey Petronio tied for 11th. Pugh’s best round of the season came at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club when he fired a 4-under 68 on the final day of the tournament.
Other notables on the list were Washington’s Chris Williams, Alabama’s Justin Thomas, and Texas’ Jordan Spieth.
