Thursday, October 04, 2012

ANTALYA, Turkey (Oct. 4, 2012) – ETSU freshman Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) fired a 4-under-par 68 and is currently tied for eighth after the first round of the World Amateur Team Championship in Antalya, Turkey.

Meronk – who is playing in his first career World Amateur – posted four birdies at the 6,882-yard, par-72 Cornelia Golf Club. The Buccaneer freshman didn’t record any bogeys on the afternoon and carded two birdies on the front and two more on the back nine. Meronk began play on the back nine and registered his first birdie on the 145-yard, par-3 12th, while picking up another two holes later on the 517-yard, par-5 14th. Meanwhile, on the front nine, Meronk birdied the 375-yard, par-4 No. 1 and the 490-yard, par-5 No. 5.

Overall, Meronk is four shots off the lead as University of Washington’s and current No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Chris Williams, finished with an 8-under-par 64 en route to guiding the United States to the team lead at 13-under 131.

While Meronk was playing at the Cornelia Golf Club, Buccaneer teammate Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) shot a 3-over 74 at the Antalya Golf Club and is tied for 87th in the 214-player field. After shooting a three over on the first three holes of the 6,954-yard, par-71 course, Pugh shot even-par over the final 15 holes. Like Meronk, Pugh also opened on the back nine and birdied the 381-yard, par-4 13th and the 492-yard, par-5 No. 7; however, bogeyed the 420-yard, par-4 No. 4 and the 205-yard, par-3 No. 6.

Poland is in a four-way tie for 17th after finishing at 1-under-par 141, while Wales is in a nine-way tie for 25th at 2-over 144.

About the World Amateur Team Championship

The World Amateur Team Championship is a biennial international amateur competition, begun in 1958. It is conducted by the International Golf Federation, which comprises national governing bodies of golf in 126 countries and international professional tours. The competition, which is being held for the 28th time, is rotated among three geographic zones: Asia-Pacific, Americas and Europe-Africa.

This year’s event is hosted by the Turkish Golf Federation. The teams play for the Eisenhower Trophy. The IGF is the international federation for golf for the International Olympic Committee and will conduct the Olympic golf competition in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team’s score for the championship.
