Wednesday, August 14, 2013
BROOKLINE, Mass. (Aug. 14, 2013) – After moving into match play via a playoff early Wednesday morning, ETSU junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) couldn’t continue his run in the U.S. Amateur Championship, as England’s Max Orrin defeated the Buccaneer golfer 1-up in the round of 64 at The Country Club.
Pugh, who was one of 17 golfers to post a 36-hole score of 4-over-par 144 following Tuesday’s final round of stroke play, secured one of the 15 remaining match play spots by registering the lowest score in his group on the first playoff hole Wednesday at 7 a.m..
Despite getting off to a hot start later in the day in match play, Pugh couldn’t hold off the seventh-ranked U.S. Amateur as Orrin was 2-down after eight and 1-down following play on the par-5, 631-yard No. 12, but the Englishman pulled even on No. 13 and eventually took the lead for good after winning the par-4, 381-yard 17th. Pugh carded a bogey on the hole, while Orrin manufactured a par. Orrin left the door open for Pugh on the 18th as he bogeyed the par-4, 421-yard hole, but Buccaneer standout also put a five on his scorecard and couldn’t move the match into a playoff.
Orrin was the No. 13 seed in the field of 64, while Pugh was No. 52.
Orrin now takes on VCU sophomore Adam Ball in the round of 32 on Thursday.
