MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 8, 2015) – The ETSU men’s golf team prepares for its second tournament of the spring season as the 39th-ranked Buccaneers head to Myrtle Beach for the General Hackler Championship, which begins Monday at The Dunes Club.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS
For the seventh straight time this season, Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) paced the Blue and Gold as the Buccaneer junior finished tied for 14th at the Puerto Rico Classic, which was held Feb. 22-24 at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s River Course.
Meronk totaled a three-round score of 1-under-par 215 (75-70-70) and carded 10 birdies for the tournament.
As a team, ETSU tied for 11th at 25-over-par 889 (299-293-297), in a field that featured nine teams ranked in the top-50.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT
The General Hackler Championship is under a new name and will be played at a new course in 2015. The full name is the “Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday General Hackler Championship,” and it’ll be played at the par-72, 7,233-yard The Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach.
The teams will play 54 holes – 36 on Monday and 18 on Tuesday – starting with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Tuesday’s final round will begin at 9 a.m.
MTSU returns to defend its team title as the Blue Raiders won the tournament by two strokes over Kent State in 2014.
ETSU won the 2006 and 2010 General Hackler Championship team titles, while from Buccaneer All-American Rhys Davies holds the tournament record at 10-under-par 206, set in 2007.
The Bucs and Chanticleers will be joined by Charleston Southern, Charlotte, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Iowa State, Jacksonville, Kent State, MTSU, NC State, North Florida, North Texas, USC Upstate, and Winthrop.
The field features five teams ranked in the top-50 – No. 25 UNF, No. 39 ETSU, No. 47 Iowa State, No. 48 Charlotte and No. 49 East Carolina.
Individually, three golfers are ranked in the top-50 – Winthrop’s Zach Seabolt (17th), ETSU’s Adrian Meronk (18th) and UNF’s MJ Maguire (36th).
Joining Meronk is Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.), Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland), Mateusz Gradecki (Oborniki Śląskie, Poland) and Tom Heggarty (Cheshire, England).
ETSU’s lineup features one senior, three juniors and a sophomore.
Freshman Cayman Ratliff (Kingsport, Tenn.) will play as an individual for the Buccaneers.
The Bucs are paired with USC Upstate and Kent State on Monday.
