NORMAN, Okla. (April 17, 2015) – ETSU’s Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) will participate in the 2015 Palmer Cup as the teams were announced Friday on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 12-14 at Rich Harvest Farms, located in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Meronk claimed a spot on the European Team based on his points ranking as he was one of the top six golfers to earn an automatic berth on the 10-man team. Two of the remaining four spots were determined by a committee selection, while Coach Jean Van de Velde held one pick and the winner of The R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament made up the final spot.
“It’s an amazing feeling to make the team and play in the Palmer Cup,” said Meronk, who is the first golfer from Poland to ever play in the tournament. “It’s an honor to earn a spot on the European Team, along with representing my country and the ETSU program. I made it a goal of mine to make the team once the first ranking list came out in the fall and I look forward to the challenge.”
Head coach Fred Warren is also proud to have seen Meronk make the Palmer Cup team.
“I’m delighted for Adrian and it’s a well-deserved honor for him to make the team,” said Warren. It’s a great opportunity for him to play against the top collegiate golfers and I know he’s looking forward to being on this stage.”
Meronk is the sixth ETSU golfer to play in the Palmer Cup and it’s also the 10th time the Buccaneers will be represented in the tournament. The other five ETSU golfers to have been represented in the Palmer Cup are – Keith Nolan (1997), Chris Wisler (2000-01), Rhys Davies (2004-07), Gareth Shaw (2007-08), and Rhys Enoch (2010).
“Having Adrian play in the Palmer Cup brings credit to our golf program,” added Warren. “We have been fortunate to have a lot of great golfers come through our program and represent ETSU in the Palmer Cup. I’m glad Adrian is a part that group.”
Meronk has enjoyed a remarkable 2014-15 season, which has seen him post two wins and record eight top-10 finishes in 11 events. The Buccaneer leader has registered a stroke average of 70.39, while 25 of his 31 rounds played this season have been of par or better.
Europe won the 2014 Palmer Cup, 18-5-11.5, while USA leads the all-time series, 9-8-1. In total, 151 Palmer Cup alums have earned wins on the PGA Tour.
