GALLATIN, Tenn. (May 22, 2015) – Former ETSU All-American Garrett Willis won his third SunTrust State Open Championship after finishing with a 54-hole score of 11-under-par 205 (70-62-73) on Thursday afternoon at The Club at Fairvue Plantation.
Willis, who totaled 21 birdies and 27 pars for the tournament, put himself atop the leaderboard with a dominating second round performance of 10-under 62. The former ETSU standout carded 10 birdies in the round and held a three-shot lead entering Thursday’s final round. Willis overcame a roller coaster round on Thursday as he carded a triple-bogey on No. 10, along with posting a bogey on No. 14 and a double-bogey on No. 15; however, his birdie on No. 11 put him back in sole possession of first-place. From there, Willis finished with three straight birdies to secure a two-shot win over 2002 State Open champion Tim Jackson.
Willis also won the State Open Championship in 2013 and 2000.
A two-time Southern Conference Golfer of the Year and 1993 Freshman of the Year, Willis was also ETSU’s top player on the team that finished third in the 1996 NCAA Championships.
