OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (Aug. 17, 2015) – ETSU’s Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.) and Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) wrapped up first round play at the 115th U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday at Olympia Fields Country Club.
Hickman is tied for 30th at even-par 70, while Meronk is tied for 78th at 2-over-par 72 following opening round play.
Hickman, who was 2-over after his first eight holes, recorded a birdie on the par-5, 539-yard No. 18 and the par-5, 566-yard No. 7, moving him even for the round. Meanwhile, Meronk totaled three birdies and three bogeys to go with a double-bogey in round one, resulting in his 72. The Buccaneer rising senior was 3-over through six, but following birdies on No. 7 and 11, Meronk moved to 1-over. However, Meronk carded a double-bogey on the par-3, 200-yard No. 12 before ending the day with a birdie on the par-5, 539-yard 18th.
Matt NeSmith leads after 18 holes of competition as the North Augusta, S.C., native registered a 5-under-par 65 on Monday. A group of four golfers are tied for second at 4-under.
Meronk tees off at 1:10 p.m. (EDT) from No. 10 on Tuesday, while Hickman goes off from No. 1 at 2:50 p.m. Both golfers will be playing on the North Course.
A total of 312 players began play on Monday. The field will be narrowed to 64 players for the match-play bracket, starting on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
