INDEPENDENCE, Minn. (Sept. 12, 2015) – Senior Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) paced the 28th-ranked ETSU men’s golf team as the Buccaneers wrapped up day one of the Gopher Invitational on Sunday evening at Windsong Farm Golf Club. Second round play was suspended due to darkness with Oklahoma, California and tournament host Minnesota still on the course.
Meronk is tied for 11th after posting a 2-over-par 144 in the first two rounds of ETSU’s season-opening tournament. The Buccaneer All-American, who registered six birdies on the day, carded an even-par 71 in round one before finishing with a 2-over 73 in the afternoon. Meronk began the tournament with a bogey on the par-4, 446-yard No. 1, but after recording eight consecutive pars, the Buccaneer senior moved back to even following his first birdie on the par-3 10th. From there, Meronk totaled two birdies and two bogeys in his final eight holes en route to finishing with the 71. In second round play, Meronk registered bookend birdies, but sandwiched in between, the Wroclaw, Poland native totaled five bogeys and a birdie to cap off the day with a 73.
As a team, the Buccaneers ended the day tied for sixth at 23-over-par 591 (293-298).
Oklahoma, who has four golfers left to wrap up second round play, sits atop the team leaderboard at 5-over-par. The 18th-ranked Sooners hold an 11-shot lead over No. 25 Baylor and a 13-stoke advantage over No. 23 California.
Individually, Iowa State’s Nick Voke is the clubhouse leader at 2-under-par 140 (68-72), while Oklahoma’s Luke Kwon is 3-under-par. Kwon posted a 1-under 70 in round one and was on No. 17 when second round play was suspended.
Fellow ETSU senior Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) – who represented the Blue and Gold in the 2015 NCAA Championship – is tied for 16th at 5-over-par 147, while junior Mateusz Gradecki (Oborniki Slaskie, Poland) is tied for 28th at 7-over-par 149. Like Meronk, Kristjansson was in the top-10 following the first 18 holes, as he also carded an even-par 71 in round one, but the Icelander was plus-6 thru the first three holes in round two and finished at 5-over-par 76. Meanwhile, Gradecki regrouped after his opening round score of 6-over 77, as he jumped 26 spots up the leaderboard following a 1-over 72 in the nightcap.
Other ETSU scores included senior Chris Hickman’s (Centreville, Md.) 10-over-par 152 (75-77) and red-shirt freshman Conor Rodrigues’ (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) 12-over-par 154 (76-78). Rodrigues is playing in his first-ever collegiate tournament.
