FORMBY, England (June 25, 2016) – ETSU's Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) kept his Palmer Cup career unbeaten streak alive as the Buccaneer All-American halved his match with Chico State’s Alistair Docherty on Saturday at Formby Golf Club.
Meronk – who is playing in his second straight Palmer Cup – is 5-0-2 all-time in the prestigious Ryder Cup-style competition.
After opening the tournament with foursomes play and four-ball competition on Friday, Europe dominated Saturday’s third round singles matches en route to extending its lead to 13-7. The host side earned seven of the 10 points available and need only 2.5 points to reclaim the Arnold Palmer Cup.
Meronk’s match was tightly contested the entire day, as it was never separated by more than 1-up. Docherty took an early lead after Meronk carded a bogey at the par-4 No. 2, but the two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year responded with a win on No. 3. Meronk eventually went 1-up after a birdie on No. 9; however, Docherty answered with a birdie of his own on No. 12. From there, Docherty birdied No. 16 to take a 1-up lead, but Meronk birdied the par-5 17th and both players halved the final hole to finish the match even.
The final round of the Palmer Cup concludes with singles matches on Sunday at 4 a.m. EDT. Meronk and Docherty will again go head-to-head in the finale.
