Hulbert guides ETSU in opening round at PGA WEST

LA QUINTA, Calif. (Feb. 18, 2019) – The ETSU men’s golf team began its spring campaign on Monday as the Buccaneers wrapped up opening round play at The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab.

Trevor Hulbert (Orlando, Fla.) led the Blue and Gold in the opener as he’s tied for 21st after carded a 1-over 72 from the Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST. Hulbert began the round with a birdie on the par-4, No. 1 and collected two more birdies on the front nine to finish with a 34 before the turn. From there, Hulbert totaled one birdie, five pars and three bogeys on the back nine to also end the day with a 72.

Jack Rhea (Jonesborough, Tenn.) totaled a 2-over 73 and is tied for 24th. Rhea carded two birdies and 14 pars, but a triple-bogey on the par-4, 380-yard No. 5 made him play from behind the remainder of the round. The Buccaneer sophomore collected a birdie on the par-4, 10th and inched closer to even-par with another birdie on the par-4, 15th; however, Rhea walked away with the bogey on No. 17 to finish with the 73.

Stanford’s Brandon Wu – who is ranked No. 46 via Golfstat – fired a 6-under 65 and takes a three-shot lead into second round play. A group of four golfers are three shots back at 3-under 69, while five golfers are tied for sixth at 2-under 69.

Oklahoma State, the reigning NCAA national champion, holds a one-shot lead after round one. The top-ranked Cowboys finished at 6-under-par 278 on Monday, while No. 16 LSU is in second and No. 43 UCLA is in third at 2-over-par 286.
