FRANKLIN, Tenn. (April 4, 2019) -- Coming off a runner-up showing last month at the Schenkel Invitational, the ETSU men’s golf team is set to make its final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championship as the Buccaneers head to the Music City for the Mason Rudolph Championship, which begins Friday from the Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course.
ABOUT THE BUCS
The Bucs are back in action for the first time since earning runner-up honors at the Schenkel Invitational back on March 17.
This marks ETSU’s 10th tournament this 2018-19 season with the SoCon Championship approaching two weeks from Sunday.
The Blue and Gold, who held the 36-hole lead at the Schenkel Invitational, finished the tournament at 13-under-par 851, while sophomore Austin Carter (Kingsport, Tenn.) paced the Bucs with a top-five finish … Carter fired three consecutive rounds of below par en route to registering his top collegiate finish as he totaled a 54-hole score of 4-under-par 212 … Carter went on to earn SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week following his performance, while he joined Chris Wisler (T3, 2001) and Mike Hulbert (T4, 1980) as the only Buccaneers to finish in the top-five at the Schenkel Invitational.
Fellow sophomore Jack Rhea (Jonesborough, Tenn.), who has posted seven top-25 finishes in nine starts this season, finished tied for seventh at 3-under-par 213 in Statesboro, Ga. … Rhea leads the team with a 71.81 stroke average, which also ranks third among conference players.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT
Vanderbilt University will host the 18th annual Mason Rudolph Men’s Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., April 5-7.
Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course will be set up as a par-71, 7,100-yard setup.
Vanderbilt defended its home turf and won the 2018 team title.
This marks the seventh straight year ETSU will be playing in the tournament with the Bucs placing fifth in 2015 as well as last season … Sophomore Shiso Go (Kanagawa, Japan) led the Blue and Gold last season as he finished tied for 12th, while senior Geuntae Kim (Daegu, South Korea) finished tied for 18th.
Joining ETSU and Vanderbilt in this year’s field are: Ball State, Chattanooga, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Liberty, Kentucky, Marquette, Memphis, MTSU, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Tennessee and Western Kentucky.
Six teams are ranked in the top-50 of either the Golfstat or Golfweek Rankings – No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 20 Liberty, No. 25 Tennessee, No. 41 Marquette, No. 45 Northwestern and No. 50 Georgia Southern.
Five golfers are ranked in the top-50 in the Golfweek rankings, including No. 6 Will Gordon (Vanderbilt) and No. 16 Steven Fisk (Georgia Southern).
The Buccaneer lineup features: Austin Carter (No. 1), Jack Rhea (No. 2), Geuntae Kim (No. 3), Trevor Hulbert (No. 4) and Shiso Go (No. 5).
ETSU’s lineup consists of three sophomores, one junior and one senior.
The Bucs tee off Friday at 1:05 p.m. (Eastern) from No. 10 and will be grouped with Memphis and Western Kentucky.
