JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 18, 2009) - Despite outshooting Stetson 20-12 in the match, the ETSU men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 game to the Hatters on Sunday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
"Stetson is a very good team and arguably the best team in the conference," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "I thought that we showed that we are equal to them in most facets of the game. We have learned how to compete with some of the best teams in the Atlantic Sun and nationally. Now we have to learn how to win on a consistent basis, and not just compete. That will come down to us being able to finish our chances and make the best use of the final ball, which in this game was a little off."
The Bucs (2-7-3, 1-3-1 A-Sun) held possession for much of the match taking ten shots in each half and had a 5-1 advantage in corners. Senior Scott Rosman (Kenner, La.) had two saves for the Buccaneers.
ETSU had an early chance in the 4th minute as Sean Hoek (Newburgh, Ind.) had a shot off of a free kick saved by Logan Potter.
The Hatters applied late pressure in the first half as Rosman made a couple big saves to keep the game scoreless going into the break.
Freshman Alesi Osorio (Austin, Texas) had the best look on the day for the Bucs in the 48th minute as he blasted a shot from just inside the 18 yard box that was knocked away by a Hatter defender standing in front of the net.
In the 49th minute, Stetson got on the board as Kevin Munz found Fredrick Brustad open on the counter attack, as Brustad slipped a shot just past an outstretched Rosman to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bucs increased their pressure in the last ten minutes of the match, but Potter was up to the challenge making three saves down the stretch to make the final 1-0 Stetson.
"We will continue to work had this week to improve our final pass and finishing till we become consistent and more predatory around the goal," Calabrese said. "That is the only way we can turn our good performances into wins. Good performances are nice, but we need to win these games that we are dominating."
ETSU is back in action next Friday at 7:30 p.m. as the Bucs take on North Florida. For more information on the ETSU men's soccer team please visit www.ETSUBucs.com.
