JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 13, 2009) - The ETSU men's soccer team drew a 1-1 tie against Virginia Tech Sunday night at the Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
"I am extremely proud of the guys tonight," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "They worked very hard against a determined and experienced Virginia Tech team. Teams in the ACC are always difficult to compete against because there is a very high standard in that league. This was a good test for us, and a great measuring stick. I feel like more than anything our team showed heart and the desire to go and win the game. We weren't just satisfied to come here and play defensively."
The Bucs (1-1-2) were out shot by the Hokies (1-2-2) 18-12 in the match as Virginia Tech had a 6-1 advantage in corners. Senior goalkeeper Scott Rosman (
"Even tough we conceded a goal in the final minutes of regulation we did not give up," Calabrese said. "In that situation most teams will fold and lose in overtime. We came out and matched them in overtime as we had many chances to win. I am really proud that we showed that we are a team that can go on the road and compete against big teams."

ETSU put pressure on the Virginia Tech defense for much of the first half out shooting the Hokies 5-4, while Virginia Tech had a 3-0 advantage in corners.
Virginia Tech came out aggressive in the second half holding the ball on the Buccaneer end for most of the half.
The Hokies tied the game at 1-all in the 89th minute as Alexander Baden headed a cross from Charlie Campbell into the back of the net.
In the first overtime, Hoek blasted a shot just over the net which ignited the ETSU offense. The Bucs had a couple more chances late in the first overtime, but the score remained tied 1-1 at the end of the period.
Both teams had chances in the second overtime period, but could not convert as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
