JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 4, 2009) - The ETSU men's soccer team cruised to a 2-0 win over VMI Friday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
"Today's performance wasn't the prettiest we have had, but I am proud that our team was able to get a good result," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "That is encouraging for us. In the first half, I felt like our passing wasn't as smooth and we played a little sluggish, but that improved in the second half as we came out and played with confidence."
The Bucs (1-0-1) outshot the Keydets (0-2-0) 20-5 in the match, and had an 8-4 advantage in corners. Senior Scott Rosman (
Jaron Westbrook (Round Rock,
Late in the first half, sophomore Sean Hoek (Newburgh, Ind.) just missed giving ETSU its second goal of the match as his shot was deflected just wide of the goal.
The Bucs outshot VMI 7-3 in the half and took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Midway through the second half, the Keydets had a three-against-two breakaway that looked dangerous for the Buccaneers, but Guilherme Reis (
"I felt like Reis played very well in the back, and really held us together," Calabrese said. "He came up with some big tackles and kept up organized. His performance was great. Also, I have always felt that on set pieces we can get a goal or two each game with dangerous players like Westbrook and Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.), and we did that today with Ronnie getting in there and making a big play."
ETSU added to its lead in the 71st minute when Tim Nixon (
"It kind of looked like we had tired legs today," Calabrese added. "I really felt Tim Nixon came in and played well like he had something to prove. I think he proved it. Overall, we really needed some players to come off the bench and play well, because we had tired legs. The college soccer season is very long and you play a lot of games in close succession. We are going to need players to come off of the bench like Tim did today."
The Bucs are back in action next Friday at 7 p.m. as they head to Radford for a non-conference match. For more information on Buccaneer men's soccer and all other Buccaneer athletic news, please visit www.ETSUBucs.com.
