JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 29, 2010) - The ETSU department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the men's soccer team are teaming up with Reach out and Read and ETSU Pediatrics to "Book the Bears" this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
Fans who donate a new or gently use children's book will receive admission for only a Buc ($1) to the ETSU men's soccer game against Mercer. The effort is in collaboration with the Reach out and Read program.
The Reach out and Read program was started in 1989 in Boston, Mass. and has spread to medical centers throughout the country. The program involves medical professionals who speak with parents about the importance of reading aloud. At regular checkups from 6 months through 5 years of age each child in the program will receive a new book to take home.
Reach out and Read is a part of the National School Readiness Initiative which looks to minimize or eliminate physical, social, emotional and cognitive limitations through early attention to child and family needs.
