Senior captain led Bucs to, 3-0, defeat of Presbyterian
MACON, Ga. (August 29, 2011) – With his three point performance against Presbyterian on Saturday, senior Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.) received Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors from the league office on Monday.
For Schoenfeld, this marks the second time he has received the weekly accolade, having also earned it the week of September 27 of last season.
Against Presbyterian on Saturday, Schoenfeld put on a show.
With ETSU playing its first contest as the reigning Atlantic Sun champions, the senior captain put the Bucs ahead early with a goal from 12 yards out in just the 11th minute. Beating the PC defense to a through ball played by Theo Yang (Lilburn, Ga.), Schoenfeld moved to his left and buried the chance in the right side of the net for what wound up as the game-winning goal.
As ETSU held a, 2-0, lead with 15 minutes to play, Schoenfeld exited the game to a standing ovation from the 972 fans in attendance in the home opener; however, his night would not be over.
With less than 10 minutes remaining head coach Scott Calabrese reentered the senior forward and an almost immediate chance was created. Dribbling the ball into the box, Schoenfeld fired a shot that was deflected back in his direction. Sliding amongst a cluster of PC defenders, Schoenfeld reached the ball first and tapped it over to David Geno (Kingsport Tenn.) who sent in the Bucs’ third goal of the night to seal the victory.
For the game, Schoenfeld took three shots, two on goal, while registering his first goal and assist of 2011.
Schoenfeld and the ETSU men’s soccer team travels to Greensboro, N.C. on Wednesday, August 31, to take on UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m.
