ETSU looks to complete the week 2-0
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (September 3, 2011) – It took 109:17 for the ETSU men’s soccer team to defeat No. 24 UNC Greensboro earlier this week, and on Sunday the Bucs will ride their 2-0-0 start into Huntington, W. Va. to take on Marshall inside Sam Hood Field at 7 p.m.
Heading into this week, the Buccaneers had never defeated a team inside the NSCAA/Continental Tires top-25 in the history of their program. Junior Alesi Osorio (Austin, Texas) rewrote that fact by sending in the game-winning goal with under one minute to play in the second overtime against UNCG, and keeping ETSU perfect in 2011.
Playing overtime matches is something Calabrese and his program are extremely familiar with, having been involved in eight such contests last year and posting a 7-1-0 record. With Wednesday night’s win, the Bucs made it eight wins in their last nine overtime games, losing only to then-No. 4 North Carolina, 2-1, on October 30 of last season. ETSU has not tied since October 4, 2009, when they played to a scoreless draw against USC Upstate.
ETSU has outscored its opponents by a combined 4-0 through the first two games. Osorio has scored a goal in each contest while senior Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) have both taken four shots and scored one goal apiece. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) leads ETSU with four saves and has not allowed a single goal, recording two shutouts, in ETSU’s first two contests.
Marshall (0-2-0) is still searching for its first victory and goal of 2011, after losing, 1-0, against both Wright State and Xavier to start the year. Outshooting their opponents by a combined 25-21, the Thundering Herd have no trouble creating chances, but have yet to beat the opposing goalkeeper as they’ve had nine of their shots saved.
Head coach Bob Gray leads Marshall in what is now his 17th season in Huntington. He’ll rely on Eddy Prugh and Tom Jackson, Marshall’s top shot-taking threats, to get a goal past the Bucs. Prugh and Jackson have combined for nine shots and three shots on goal to this juncture.
