Senior captain becomes first Buccaneer to be named First Team selection
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Dec. 9, 2011) – Senior forward Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.) made Buccaneer history on Friday, becoming the first member of the ETSU men’s soccer team to be named a NSCAA All-South Region First Team selection.
The All-South Region honor is the second of Schoenfeld’s career, having been named to the Second Team after the Bucs’ 2010 championship campaign. Former Buc Guilherme Reis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) joined Schoenfeld as the other ETSU selection that year, earning the program its first two All-South Region selections.
Schoenfeld is one of two student-athletes from the Atlantic Sun Conference named to the 2011 First Team list, joining Stetson’s Jonathan Mendoza. In total, the A-Sun had seven All-South Region selections as FGCU’s Josey Portillo and Jacksonville’s Tobias Hottner were given Second Team honors, and FGCU’s Chirstian Raudales and Stetson’s Luis Ocejo and Gonzalo DeMujica were named to the Third Team.
This year, Schoenfeld scored seven goals, tallied a team-leading five assists and notched 19 points as ETSU registered its second-consecutive 10-win season and advanced to its second-consecutive Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship final. One of the senior’s many clutch performances of the 2011 season came October 29, when ETSU needed a win over conference foe USC Upstate to earn a spot in the A-Sun Tournament. With ETSU trailing 1-0 with less than 16 minutes to play, Schoenfeld assisted junior Alesi Osorio (Austin Texas) on the equalizer, before sending the Bucs through to the A-Sun Tournament a few minutes later with the seventh game-winning goal of his career.
Schoenfeld will leave ETSU with 20 goals, seven game-winners, 10 assists and 50 points as the program’s all-time leader in each category. His 68 starts is also first in program history, and his 72 games played and 5,357 minutes of action ranks second only to fellow departing senior Ronnie Westbrook (Round Rock, Texas).
