SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Nov. 5, 2013) – A 99th-minute golden goal by senior David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) gave the ETSU men’s soccer team a 3-2 road win over regionally-ranked Wofford Tuesday night, extending the Bucs’ unbeaten streak to three matches. The contest was the final match of the regular season for ETSU.
The Buccaneers (8-5-2) used a pair of first-half goals from William Nordenstrom (Linkoping, Sweden) and Joao Ramalho (Monte Santo, Brazil) to jump out to a 2-0 lead on Wofford, the Southern Conference regular season champions.
Nordenstrom’s 24th-minute score was the freshman’s first career goal. About five minutes later, Ramalho buried a shot from 16 yards out into the bottom left corner to beat Wofford goalkeeper Garrett Cross.
The Terriers (10-6-1) refused to go down without a fight, cutting into ETSU’s lead before halftime with a goal from Nestor Jaramillo.
The Bucs maintained their 2-1 lead until for much of the second half until Wofford’s Forrest Lasso was able to convert a header off a throw in the 80th minute to force overtime.
ETSU only recorded one shot in the extra period, however it was all the Bucs would need.
Following a cross into the box from senior Jonny Campbell (Johnson City, Tenn.), Geno sent a header past Cross to seal the win for the Bucs, clinching ETSU’s fourth-straight season of eight or more wins.
The Buccaneers outshot Wofford, 18-14, in the match, including 11 first-half shots.
With the win, ETSU snapped Wofford's three-match win streak. The Terriers entered Tuesday's match coming off a win over No. 14 Furman.
ETSU will receive a short, well-deserved break until the start of next week’s Atlantic Sun Championships.
