ETSU men's soccer falls to Jacksonville, 1-0
Sunday, October 05, 2008
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 5, 2008) - The ETSU men's soccer team lost another heartbreaker Sunday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium as the Bucs fell to Jacksonville on a last minute goal, 1-0.
"Our guys showed a lot of character throughout the game," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "We did a good job of battling back in the second half when Jacksonville really got on us, and in the end I am really proud of the effort our guys showed today."
The Bucs (4-5, 0-2 A-Sun) played the Dolphins even in the first half as the score remained 0-0 at the end of the half. In the second half, both teams created good scoring opportunities, but neither team was able to get on the board until late.
In the 86th minute, Stefan Runeman gave Jacksonville a 1-0 lead as he beat the Buccaneer keeper with a one-timer from Jonathon Jackson. ETSU had a couple more chances in the remaining minutes, but the Dolphins defense played tough as Jacksonville was able to hang on for the win.
"Once we got our confidence in the second half we were able to get some opportunities," Calabrese said. "You would think maybe on another day those opportunities would go in, but unfortunately they didn't. I think we did a good job of limiting their chances."
ETSU was outshot by Jacksonville 15-8 as the Dolphins also had a 6-1 advantage in corners. Defensively, James Holt (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led the Bucs with eight saves.
The Bucs are back in action next weekend as they head to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Lipscomb on Friday at 8 p.m. and Belmont on Sunday at 3 p.m. Please visit www.ETSUBucs.com for more information on men's soccer or any other Buccaneer athletic news.
