JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 14, 2008) - The ETSU men's soccer team defeated Elon at the Elon Classic Friday afternoon at Rudd Field in Elon, N.C., 1-0.

"It was a total team victory, and the guys showed incredible resiliency and character under difficult conditions to get the win," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "Down the stretch when our backs were against the wall we bent at times, but we never broke and fought for everything."

The Bucs (3-2) again held its opponent scoreless in the first half as play was back and forth the entire half. ETSU took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute when Sean Hoek (Newburgh, Ind.) netted an unassisted shot for his second goal of the season as he rocketed a shot past the Elon keeper.

Elon had several goal scoring opportunities last in the second half, but the Bucs defense continued to play tough preserving the 1-0 lead.

ETSU was outshot by the Phoenix 19-7 with only three shots on goal. Defensively James Holt (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) had a season high six saves as he picked up his third win.

"James has gained a lot of confidence over the past couple of games, and has performed extremely well," Calabrese said. "Sean's goal was a great goal. He absolutely smashed it over the keeper into the top of the net."

Tyler Hoek (Newburgh, Ind.), Sean Hoek and James Holt were named to the Elon Classic All-Tournament Team as ETSU finished second in the Elon Classic behind UNC Greensboro.

"The guys have shown time and time again that they can win in the face of adversity," Calabrese said. "They have put together gutsy performances against good teams and find ways to win. I think that it is important that the guys have a winning character like they have shown today going forward."

The Bucs are back in action Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. as they will host High Point at Summers-Taylor Stadium. Please visit www.ETSUBucs.com for more information on ETSU men's soccer and all other Buccaneer athletic news.
