ETSU soccer leading the way in the classroom

Tuesday, February 09, 2010

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 9, 2010) - The ETSU men's and women's soccer teams finished first in the Atlantic Sun academic standing the conference office announced last week.

"Our men's and women's soccer student-athletes work very hard with their athletic training and as the results show from the Fall's academic performance, in the classroom as well," said Assistant Athletic Director of Academic Services Bob Baker. "Their achievement of a number one academic ranking over all Atlantic Sun Soccer programs is amazing, especially when you consider all of the other quality programs and student-athletes in our conference.  Honestly, the term "scholar athlete" seems more appropriate for the men and women in our soccer programs as they make my staff's job of academic support easy.  For this, I thank them personally."

Currently ETSU is a close second overall to Lipscomb in the A-Sun All-Academic Race. The success of the two fall sports have kept the Bucs within reach of winning the title for the first time since joining the Atlantic Sun in 2005.

"I'm extremely pleased with our ladies success inside the classroom," said ETSU women's head coach Heather Henson. "There are a number of great academic institutions in our league so it's a great honor to see our players represent our program the way they have in the A-Sun. Our goal is to be a top-level program both on and off the field. As a coach it's nice to see our girls represent themselves as true student-athletes."

The ETSU women's soccer team had 17 of its 19 eligible athletes achieve A-Sun All-Academic honors, while posting a team GPA of 3.43.  The men's team had 14 of 21 athletes make the All-Academic team and had a team GPA of 3.21.

"It's great to see our players achieving in the classroom as well as on the field," said ETSU head men's coach Scott Calabrese. "The demands placed on a student athlete to balance athletics and academics requires a great deal of discipline. I am very proud that our team is achieved such a high degree of success in the classroom.
