Buccaneers beat Wildcats 1-0 in front of home crowd

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 5, 2013) – In front of a home crowd of 1,062, the ETSU men’s soccer team bested Kentucky 1-0 Thursday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium. Freshman defender Thibault Civalier (Nice, France) recorded the eventual game-winning goal in the 47th minute to give the Buccaneers their first win of the young season.

ETSU and Kentucky played to a standstill through the first half, entering intermission deadlocked at 0-0.

Civalier’s game-winner, which broke the tie early in the second half, came as a result of a rebound following a shot from ETSU senior defender Nate Hodges (Meridian, Miss.).

“I saw a wall of blue,” Hodges said. “I just chose an area that didn’t have blue. [Itode] Fubara actually dodged the ball to let it go on frame. I’m sure the keeper couldn’t see it, and [Thibault] Civalier was there to tap it in at the end.”

The goal marked the first on the season for the Buccaneers (1-1-0) and the first career goal for Civalier.

ETSU outshot the Wildcats (1-1-0) by a 10-5 margin, while senior goalkeeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) recorded his program-best 16th career shutout.

The win helped the Buccaneers add to their impressive record at Summers-Taylor Stadium. In the past 14 home matches, ETSU has posted a stellar mark of 9-2-3.

“It’s quite obvious with that kind of record that our home support is key to our success,” Buccaneer head coach Scott Calabrese said. “The crowd was excellent. I really appreciate everyone who came out.”

The Bucs will return to Summers-Taylor Stadium Monday when they host Winthrop at 7:00 p.m.
