Reigning A-Sun Player of the Year, David Geno, makes season debut

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 9, 2013) – Despite outshooting Winthrop 16-4 after halftime, ETSU was unable to find the scoring column, tying the Eagles, 0-0. With the result, ETSU extended its home unbeaten streak to six matches.

The Buccaneers (1-1-1) were held to just one shot in the first half, but came out firing after intermission, recording 12 shots in the second half and four shots in the first overtime period.

“We talked at halftime and reaffirmed the type of things we want to do as a team,” ETSU head coach Scott Calabrese said following the match. “I thought the guys came out after that halftime break and played the type of soccer that we want to play.”

With six shots on goal in the second half, the Bucs had several scoring opportunities, including a pair of shots in the final minute of regulation.

With the game tied at 0-0 in the 89th minute, ETSU senior Luis Calzadilla (Caracas, Venezuela) fired a ball from the right side at Winthrop goalkeeper Guilherme Avelar, who deflected the shot away and into the box. ETSU freshman William Nordenstrom (Linkoping, Sweden) reacted quickly, collecting a header off the rebound, however Avelar made another impressive save to send the game into overtime.

“In the second half, we we had excellent movement from players up top,” Calabrese said. “They were able to hold the ball and help us to keep possession. I thought we were on the ascendancy and could have won the game.”

Instead, after two scoreless overtimes, the match ended in a scoreless deadlock.

ETSU’s defense limited the Eagles (2-0-1) to just four second-half shots, helping senior goalkeeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) record his second consecutive shutout and the 17th of his career.

After missing the first two contests of the season, reigning Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.), checked into the game in the 32nd minute to a round of applause from the home crowd. The MAC Hermann Trophy nominee played 45 minutes, recording one shot.

Three freshmen started the game for the Bucs, and newcomers netted nearly 31% of the possible minutes for ETSU.

“It’s still early in the season and we have a lot of new players,” Calabrese said. “They are learning our style and about each other as players. That is something that takes time. If we keep moving in this direction, we’re going to do well.”

The Buccaneers will travel to Birmingham, Ala. this weekend to take part in UAB’s “Soccer For a Cure Classic.” While there, ETSU will play Memphis Friday, Sept. 13 and No. 18 UAB Sunday, Sept. 15.
