JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 25, 2014) – ETSU Head Men’s Soccer Coach Bo Oshoniyi has announced the schedule for Bucs’ 2014 campaign, which will see ETSU return to the Southern Conference.

The 2013 Atlantic Sun Champion Buccaneers will kick off the season Friday, Aug. 15 at 4:30 p.m., with an intrasquad Blue & Gold exhibition match.

The Bucs will then play a pair of exhibition matches, Aug. 18 versus Milligan at Summers-Taylor Stadium, and Aug. 23 in Blacksburg, Va., against ACC opponent Virginia Tech.

ETSU went 10-6-4 last season en route to securing the program’s second NCAA Tournament appearance.

NON-CONFERENCE

The Bucs will begin regular season play by participating in the VCU Invitational in Richmond, Va. In the tournament, ETSU will take on a pair of squads that made NCAA Tournament appearances last season: William & Mary and VCU.

ETSU will play William & Mary Friday, Aug. 29, before facing off against tournament-host VCU Saturday, Aug. 31.

In 2013, William & Mary posted an 11-5-3 record, including two victories against the nation’s No. 1 ranked team. The Tribe, which was ranked as high as No. 21 last season, defeated No. 1 Creighton, 3-2 (2OT), Sept. 15, and No. 1 North Carolina, 1-0, Sept. 24.

Like William & Mary, VCU also won 11 games a year ago, finishing the season with an 11-8-2 mark. The Rams were ranked as high as No. 17 last season.

The remainder of the Bucs’ non-conference slate will consist of four familiar foes, and one team which ETSU has never shared the pitch with.

During the month of September, the Bucs will take on Radford, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Winthrop: four teams ETSU played in 2013. However, Sept. 16, will blend old and new as the Bucs will host FIU, a team ETSU has never competed against. At the helm for the Panthers, though, is former ETSU Head Coach Scott Calabrese, who amassed 57 wins as coach of the Bucs from 2008-2013, helping lead ETSU to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.

CONFERENCE

The 2014 campaign will mark ETSU’s return to the Southern Conference, in which the Bucs competed in from 1978-2005.

Last season, the Bucs went 2-1-1 against SoCon opponents, picking up wins over Mercer and regionally-ranked Wofford.

Mercer is one of three teams joining the SoCon this season, along with ETSU and VMI.

The 2013 SoCon Men’s Soccer standings* are as follows:

*Appalachian State, Davidson, Elon, and Georgia Southern are no longer members of the Southern Conference.
