ETSU ends preseason with win over Virginia Tech, shifts focus to regular season

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 26, 2014) – Since the program's inception in 2008, ETSU Men's Soccer has established itself as a regional contender, regularly defeating opponents from the nation's elite conferences.

The Bucs concluded their 2014 preseason with another such win, knocking off ACC opponent Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Over the weekend, the new-look Bucs, featuring 15 newcomers to the roster along with a new head coach, knocked off the Hokies on their home turf, 1-0.

After an evenly-contested first half in which ETSU outshot Va. Tech, 5-4, the teams headed to intermission locked in a scoreless draw.

However, the Bucs took control of the second period, outshooting the Hokies, 18-9, including a game-winning goal by sophomore Joao Ramalho (Monte Santo, Brazil) in the 85th minute.

"Anytime you can get a result on the road against an ACC program in preseason or the regular season, it's huge for our program," ETSU head coach Bo Oshoniyi said. "We are a young group with a lot to still work on to reach our goals this season, but this is certainly a step in the right direction."

Last season, the Hokies picked up a win versus No. 17 Syracuse, in addition to earning draws against No. 1 North Carolina, No. 16 Clemson, and No. 19 Virginia. Virginia Tech also suffered narrow, one-goal setbacks to eventual national champion Notre Dame and national runner-up Maryland.

The Bucs, themselves, are no strangers to going toe-to-toe with Top 25 teams. In 2014, ETSU defeated No. 8 UAB on the road. Since 2011, ETSU has compiled a 4-1-3 record versus Top 25 opponents.

ETSU will look to build on its solid preseason as it prepares to face off against William & Mary and VCU in Richmond, Va., Friday, Aug. 29 and Sunday, Aug. 31, respectively.

William & Mary finished the 2013 campaign at No. 19 in the NCAA Men's Soccer RPI Rankings.

Both William & Mary and VCU received votes in the most recent NSCAA Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
