JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 4, 2014) - ETSU continued Southern Conference play Saturday night, going toe-to-toe with familiar foe Mercer, who, like the Bucs, competed in the Atlantic Sun Conference prior to joining the SoCon this season.
The Buccaneers (4-5, 0-2) were held without a goal for just the third time this season, falling to Mercer, 1-0, in Johnson City.
The teams played to a scoreless draw throughout the match's first 66 minutes until Jourdan Gooden recorded a 67th-minute goal to give the Bears (6-4, 2-0) the lead.
ETSU had several solid scoring opportunities on the night, including an early 16th-minute attempt by Henrique Novaes (Vinhedo, Brazil) that was saved by Mercer keeper Greg Ranjitsingh.
Ranjitsingh recorded four saves in the contest en route to clinching his sixth clean sheet of the season.
Each of Mercer's six victories this season have come via a shutout. The Bears entered Saturday's match ranking 14th in the nation for shutout percentage.
Trailing 1-0 late in the match, freshman Robin L'Excellent (Digosville, France) fired a shot from 30 yards out that sailed just inches above the crossbar.
ETSU redshirt sophomore Joao Ramalho (Monte Santo, Brazil) recorded five shots in the loss, including two shots on goal. Ramalho entered the match ranking fifth in the nation for goals per game (0.86).
Meanwhile, Novaes recorded three shots, two of which were on goal.
The Bucs will continue Southern Conference play Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m., as they play host to fellow SoCon newcomer VMI.
