JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 7, 2014) - The ETSU men's soccer team picked up its first Southern Conference win of the season Tuesday night, defeating VMI, 2-0, inside Summers-Taylor Stadium. The result was the also the first shutout of the year for the Bucs.
ETSU outshot the Keydets (1-9-1, 0-3) by a 20-2 margin in the contest and benefited from goals by freshman Fletcher Ekern (Knoxville, Tenn.) and senior Anthony Wojas (Auxerre, France).
Ekern gave the Bucs (5-5, 1-2) a 1-0 lead with a 27th-minute header, the eventual game-winner, off an assist from sophomore William Nordenstrom (Linkoping, Sweden). The goal was the first of Ekern's collegiate career.
ETSU sealed the victory with a 64th-minute score by Wojas, who was assisted by ETSU's leading goal scorer, Joao Ramalho (Monte Santo, Brazil). The goal was Wojas' first of the season.
Ramalho attempted a game-high 10 shots, six of which were on goal. The redshirt sophomore was not able to find the back of the net; however, had several solid scoring opportunities, including an 11th-minute shot that glanced the crossbar, and a pair of shots at 18:05 and 18:08 that VMI keeper Alex Guerra turned away, making two terrific saves.
Guerra made 10 saves for the Keydets, including a 57th-minute stop of a Nordenstrom shot on a breakaway.
The Bucs will continue SoCon play Friday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m., as they visit UNC Greensboro.
