JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 15, 2014) - Amid rainy conditions, the ETSU men's soccer team picked up its second league win Wednesday night, holding off perennial SoCon power Furman, 1-0, at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

In the latter stages of a tightly-contested first half, redshirt sophomore Joao Ramalho (Monte Santo, Brazil) scored his team-best eighth goal of the season to give the Buccaneers (6-6, 2-3) a 1-0 advantage heading into intermission.

Ramalho's eventual game-winning goal (38') was the result of a free kick following a Furman foul and yellow card just outside the box.

Both ETSU and Furman recorded four shots in the first half; however, the Paladins (5-4-3, 1-3-1) imposed their will upon the second period, outshooting the Bucs by a 12-2 margin.

ETSU withstood Furman's steady offensive attack with a concerted and inspired defensive effort, preventing the Paladins from finding the back of the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Adelman (Johnson City, Tenn.) and the ETSU defense frustrated Furman throughout the match en route to earning the Bucs' second shutout in the last three matches.

A particularly telling sequence came in the match's 88th minute when the Bucs' defense thwarted two point-blank Furman attempts, turning away shots by Tyler Peoples (87:39) and Kyle McLagan (87:41).

Furman fired four of its 12 second-half shot attempts during the final four minutes of play, including an attempt by goalkeeper Sven Lissek after the Paladins pulled him from goal for the final two minutes to allow Furman to play with a one-man advantage.

With the victory, ETSU avenged last season's sobering loss to Furman when the Paladins beat the Bucs, 5-0, in Johnson City.
