Bucs to host Southern Conference Championship at Summers-Taylor Stadium

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 13, 2015) – The 2015 ETSU men’s soccer schedule has been released as head coach Bo Oshoniyi announced the full slate of games on Monday.

Coming off a seven-win season featuring victories over South Carolina, VCU and William & Mary, coach Oshoniyi has high expectations entering year two at the helm.

“As always, our goal is to win the Southern Conference and advance to the NCAA Tournament. I am really excited about the team we have coming back this year and our incoming class”, said Oshoniyi. “We finished the spring season 4-1 with four shutouts while allowing just two goals. I think our mentality is closer to where we need it, to be champions of the Southern Conference and make a run in the NCAA Tournament.”

Prior to opening regular season play, ETSU will play in three friendlies starting with its annual Blue/Gold game on Aug. 15. The Bucs’ other two exhibition games are against King University (Aug. 19) and Virginia Tech (Aug. 22). The Blue and Gold defeated Virginia Tech, 1-0, last season in a scrimmage in Blacksburg.

ETSU travels to Atlantic Coast Conference champion, Clemson, on Aug. 28 to open the 2015 campaign. The Bucs then host High Point in their home opener on Sept. 1.

“We will finish our pre-season hosting Virginia Tech and open our regular season with a tough road match at Clemson,” said Oshoniyi. “These two matches will show us exactly where we are and what we will need to do to get where we want to be at the end of the season.”

The team then takes a road trip to face Radford and Appalachian State. The Buccaneers will return home to finish their non-conference schedule against the Kentucky on Sept. 16 and Liberty on Sept. 22.

The Bucs kick-off their conference schedule on the road at Wofford on Sept. 29 and play their first home conference game against VMI on Oct. 3.

From there, ETSU travels to UNCG on Oct. 6 for the first of two games against the Spartans. The Bucs seek retribution against UNCG after being swept in two SoCon matches during the regular season and being eliminated from the conference tournament last season. UNCG visits Johnson City to end regular season play on Halloween.

ETSU will face top conference foes Mercer and Furman two times each during the regular season. The Buccaneers take on the two teams back-to-back on Oct. 10 and 13 at home and on the road on Oct. 23 and 27.

ETSU will be hosting its first-ever SoCon Championship, which runs Nov. 7-15. The quarterfinals will be hosted at the highest seeded team, while Summers-Taylor Stadium plays host to the semifinals and championship on Nov. 13-15.

“The SoCon will be one of the toughest conferences in the country,” Oshoniyi said. “We are excited to compete with Furman, UNCG, Mercer, VMI, and Wofford, and we are looking forward to hosting the Southern Conference Championship here at Summers-Taylor Stadium.”
