JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 21, 2015) – The ETSU men’s soccer team has been preparing for their final exhibition match against the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday, August 22 at 7 p.m at Summers-Taylor Stadium. Since the men’s soccer team started in 2008, the Bucs have met VT three times and are 2-0-1 against the Hokies.
In 2009, ETSU faced off against Virginia Tech for their fourth game of the regular season. At that time, the Bucs were 1-1-1 while coming off a close 1-0 loss to Radford University. The Bucs were able to tie the Hokies, 1-1 after two overtime periods.
The goalie for ETSU had a career high seven saves while having 18 shots come from the Hokies. The only Buccaneer goal came early in the game off a penalty kick. However, the VT goalie blocked the penalty kick, but his own defender knocked the ball into his own net. Virginia Tech ultimately tied the game in the 89th minute with a header that snuck by the ETSU goal keeper. Each team had chances to gain the lead in overtime but strong defense kept the game tied.
In the most recent match between ETSU and VT, the Bucs came out on top in Blacksburg, Va. last season. The game was evenly matched in the first half with the Bucs outshooting the Hokies 5-4. The game winning goal came in the 85th minute from sophomore, forward Joao Ramalho. VT was only able to get off nine shots in the match with only one coming on goal, which was saved by goalie Daniel Adelman.
Virginia Tech did not have one of their best seasons last year with a 7-8-2 record, but the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) was proven to be one of the toughest conferences last season. The Hokies fought hard against 15th ranked Virginia, who eventually won the NCAA tournament, in a 1-0 loss and even took 9th ranked Syracuse into overtime. VT is predicted to finish fifth in the ACC this season, according to the preseason coach’s poll.
ETSU proves to have some success against the ACC with a 3-3-4 record, including preseason matches. The Bucs have two wins against Virginia Tech in 2014 and 2011 and Clemson in 2010. Since 2012, the Buccaneers are just 1-0-1 against the ACC.
The Bucs have 18 returners when they defeated the Hokies last season and have brought in 14 new faces to help improve the team.
ETSU is fresh off a 5-1 win against King University with goals from five different players. Virginia Tech has played against James Madison University this season and finishes their preseason schedule against ETSU.
