JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 5, 2015) – A graduate student James Smith (Eastbourne, England) was honored on Monday as the September Player of the Month for men’s soccer in the Southern Conference. Smith was honored during the week of Sept. 14 as the SoCon player of the week with his one goal and one assist performance in the 3-1 victory over No. 23 Kentucky.
Smith leads ETSU in points this year with 11. He scored 10 of those points in the month of September with four goals and two assists. He finished the month of September strong with three straight games with a goal. Smith netted a goal and dished an assist in both the Kentucky and Wofford games. He also scored the first goal in every game he netted a point.
His first career goal as a Buccaneer came on Sept.1 as the Bucs faced High Point. While at ETSU, he conquered two milestones as he picked up his 20th career goal in the Liberty match and his 20th career assist in the Kentucky match. He scored 17 goals and assisted in 19 goals while at Lees-McRae before transferring to ETSU this fall.
He leads the SoCon in points with 11 and is tied for the lead with four goals scored. Smith is tied for second in game-winnings goals (2) and assists (3).
The Bucs will be traveling to continue conference play as they take on UNCG. The match will take place in Greensboro, N.C. at UNCG Soccer stadium on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. The Spartans are currently 5-5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
